Never Break a Pick Again — 7 Lockpicking Tips for Gothic 1 Remake

Probe links before you push, keep slack on both sides, buy Trained early, and let a solver do the math. Seven tips that end broken picks and reset locks.

Gothic 1 Remake's lockpicking is deterministic — no randomness, no luck. Which means every broken pick is a process failure, and process failures have process fixes. These seven tips eliminate nearly all of them.

Linkages are invisible. Before attempting any lock beyond 4 plates, nudge each plate one step left, then back, then right, and note which plates move — and whether they follow or mirror. This 2-minute investment is the difference between a solved lock and a snapped pick at step 25.

Only mark links you actually observed. Plates sitting close together are not necessarily linked.

2. Center independent plates first — and leave slack

An unlinked plate should go straight to the center notch (4). But if it's near an edge, center it with slack on both sides — a linked move later in the sequence can shove it, and slack absorbs the shove instead of snapping your pick against a wall.

3. Solve small linked groups next, heavy tangles last

Work order matters: independent plates → small link groups (align the whole group roughly) → heavily-connected plates last, once everything else is stable. Perfecting one plate early is wasted effort if a later move drags it back out.

4. Buy Trained before you attempt anything with 5+ plates

Untrained gives you a 2-mistake budget and a full lock reset on break. Trained (10 LP + 100 ore from Fingers in the Old Camp) doubles the budget and removes the reset. Only 8 of the game's 346 locks are comfortable untrained — the math is not subtle. Full skill tier breakdown here →

5. Save before every lock (yes, still)

A combination never re-randomizes on reload — but a bug can make an inspected lock behave impossibly after a skill upgrade, and a separate "nasty thieves" bug made guides recommend saving before every attempt. Quicksave is free insurance.

6. Push toward gaps, never toward walls

The only way to break a pick is pushing a plate into a direction it cannot travel. When you have a choice of directions, push toward the side with more room. If your solution has you pushing a plate 3 steps toward an edge, re-check that plate's position — it's probably mis-entered.

7. Or just let a solver do all of it

Everything above — link mapping, work order, wall avoidance — is exactly what our free Gothic Remake lockpick solver automates:

  1. Set each plate's position by clicking the rail.
  2. Mark observed links (Same / Opposite).
  3. Press Solve — you get the shortest sequence and an alternative that touches the fewest plates (easiest to remember), with a demo that plays the solution so you can follow along in-game.

If your link notes are wrong, the solver doesn't just fail — it tells you which link is probably mis-entered and what it should be. That's the single most common error in manual lock mapping, and it's fixable in seconds instead of another 30-step failure.
