Gothic Remake Lockpicking Skill Levels — Is Trained or Master Worth It?
Untrained picks break after 2 mistakes and reset the lock. Trained costs 10 LP + 100 ore, Master 20 LP + 200 ore. Here's what each tier actually changes and when to buy.
Lockpicking is the most skills-gated activity in Gothic 1 Remake — and the most debated. Half the community calls it brutal, half calls it the best lockpicking system ever made. Both are right: it depends almost entirely on which skill tier you've bought.
The three tiers, and what each one changes
| Tier | Cost | Mistakes before the pick breaks | Reset on break? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Untrained | free (default) | 2 | Yes — full lock reset |
| Trained | 10 learning points + 100 ore nuggets | 4 | No |
| Master | 20 learning points + 200 ore nuggets | 6 | No — and broken picks remove a plate link |
Two numbers matter most. First, the mistake budget: untrained, you get 2 wrong pushes before the pick snaps. Second, the reset rule: untrained, a snapped pick resets the entire lock to the start. Trained and Master remove the reset — you keep your progress and just continue with a fresh pick.
Master's hidden perk: when a pick breaks at Master level, the break can permanently remove a plate connection from the lock, making the puzzle simpler. This is also why, if you're following a solution from a tool or guide, the sequence can stop working after you learn Master — the lock itself has changed.
The cost math: when does Trained pay off?
Trained costs 10 learning points + 100 ore nuggets, taught by Fingers in the Old Camp (more on him below). Learning points are scarce — you earn them by leveling, and every skill competes for them.
The value proposition:
- Untrained 5-plate locks run ~30-step solutions. Trained cuts real sequences to roughly ~15 steps because you can afford exploratory moves without losing the lock.
- 6–7 plate locks are described by players as taking 10–15 minutes untrained. Trained, the same locks are minutes.
- One Nexus Mods rebalance mod quantified it brutally: of the game's 346 locks, only 8 are comfortably pickable untrained (fewer than 5 connections). Master handles all 346.
Verdict: buy Trained early. It's the single best quality-of-life purchase in the game — you'll be opening chests constantly, and every chest before Fingers is a dice roll with a 2-mistake budget and a full-reset penalty.
Where to find Fingers (and what he wants)
Fingers is a Shadow in the Old Camp, in a hut near the Arena — past Snatch's cauldron, uphill on the right. Diego can give you a map marker.
He won't teach you immediately: he wants you to steal a ring from Scatty first. Complete that small theft quest and the training options unlock. A second trainer, Wedge, operates in the New Camp if you end up there.
Where to buy lockpicks cheap
You'll burn through picks either way. The cheapest sources:
- Mordrag — 13 ore nuggets each (cheapest; bench on the east side of the covered market, south of the Old Camp)
- Fisk — up to 12 picks at 15 ore each
- Dexter also stocks them
- Plus loot and stealing (red item text = stolen goods)
What about Master?
Master (20 LP + 200 ore) is worth it if you're completionist about chests — the link-removal perk compounds across the game's hardest locks. But if you're rationing learning points for weapon skills or acrobatics, Trained plus a solver covers 95% of what you need. Our free lockpick solver works at every skill level: set the plates and links, get the sequence, done.
One warning: the skill-upgrade bug
There's a widely reported bug worth knowing: inspect a lock while untrained, upgrade your skill, then return to it — the lock can become unsolvable, because the upgrade removed the one linkage your earlier inspection was based on. Opening a fresh lock after upgrading works fine. The workaround: don't half-inspect locks before training, or re-open the lock fresh if it starts behaving impossibly.
