How the Gothic Remake lock works

Gothic 1 Remake replaced the original's blind left-right guessing with a deterministic sliding puzzle. Every lock — whether you call the parts plates, sliders, pins, tumblers, rows, or gates — follows the same three rules:

3–7 plates, 7 positions

Each lock stacks 3–7 horizontal plates. Every plate slides along a track of 7 notches and carries one pin. Center every pin on the middle notch and the lock opens.

Plates are linked

Moving one plate often drags others with it — same direction or opposite, with no visual hint of which. Probing these links (nudge, watch, undo) is the real puzzle.

Walls break picks

The only way to fail is pushing a plate past the end of its track. Untrained, two mistakes snap the pick and reset the whole lock. Higher lockpicking skill widens the margin.

How to solve Gothic Remake locks in 3 steps

1. Map the plates

Count the plate rows in the lock window (4–7). Note each plate's current position from −3 to +3 — 0 means it is already centred. Enter them above.

2. Test the interactions

Turn one plate a single step and watch which other plates move with it. Same direction = “Same”, mirrored = “Opp.”. Turn back to undo, then test the next plate. Only mark links you actually observed — plates being close together does not mean they are linked.

3. Follow the solution

The solver updates live as you type. “Fewest moves” gets you open in the shortest number of clicks; “Fewest switches” touches the fewest different plates — useful when you keep losing track. Hit Demo to watch the solution play out before doing it in-game.

Tip: raise your lockpicking skill

Higher lockpicking skill removes some plate interactions, making locks easier — but this solver works at any skill level.

Why use this lockpick solver

Every lock in Gothic Remake is deterministic — the same input always yields the same solution. That makes it perfect for a solver, and this one is built to be the fastest to use mid-game:

Instant answers, no guesswork

The solver computes the shortest opening sequence the moment you press Solve — no forum diving, no pen-and-paper link maps, no 30-step trial and error against the clock.

Two solutions, pick your style

Fewest moves opens fastest; fewest switches touches the fewest plates and is far easier to memorize mid-raid. Both are computed, so you choose.

Tells you when you mistyped

Entered a link wrong? The solver doesn't just fail — it names the suspect link and suggests what it should be. Other tools leave you staring at 'no solution'.

Demo before you commit

Watch the solution play out on an animated lock before risking a pick in-game — the world doesn't pause while you pick, and guards don't wait.

Works at every lockpicking skill level — untrained, Trained, or Master. Share any lock as a plain URL, nothing is uploaded, and there are no accounts or ads. Not affiliated with THQ Nordic or Alkimia Interactive.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Gothic Remake lockpick solver free?

Yes — completely free, with no ads and no account. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

What do "Same" and "Opp." links mean?

When you turn a plate one step, a linked plate moves too. "Same" means it moves in the same direction as the plate you turned; "Opp." (opposite) means it mirrors the movement. Test in-game by turning one plate a single step and observing.

The solver says "no solution" — what now?

Almost always a link direction entered wrong. The solver tells you exactly which link is suspect and what it probably should be. If you re-test that link in-game, you can confirm before changing it.

Fewest moves or fewest switches?

Both open the lock. Fewest moves is the shortest sequence of turns. Fewest switches touches the fewest different plates, which is easier to remember and execute — useful for complex locks where mistakes are costly.

How do I share a lock with a friend?

Set up the lock and hit "Copy share link". The full configuration is encoded in the URL — no account, no server, just a link that opens the same lock on their device.

Does this work for other Gothic games?

This solver is built for the Gothic Remake linked-plate mechanic. Classic Gothic locks and other RPG lockpicking minigames use different mechanics and are not supported.
